About Museo Monseñor Juan Sinforiano Bogarín
An ecclesiastical museum of sacred art and Paraguayan history located next to the Metropolitan Cathedral of Asunción, named after Monsignor Juan Sinforiano Bogarín (1863-1949), the first Archbishop of Asunción. Much of the collection was gathered, preserved and rescued by Bogarín himself over his 54 years as a bishop.
The building that houses the museum has its own long history: it was the residence of Paraguayan consul Fulgencio Yegros (1780-1821), one of the leading figures of independence; it later served as a public jail during the government of Dr. José Gaspar Rodríguez de Francia, and over time it also functioned as a seminary, a school and a storage facility, before becoming the current museum.
The collection includes Jesuit and Franciscan sacred art, colonial furniture, objects linked to the founding fathers of independence and to the era of the López presidents, and war material from the War of the Triple Alliance ("Guerra del 70") and the Chaco War, among other everyday objects from the colonial period. Notable rooms include the Sala Monseñor Bogarín, displaying personal belongings and accounts of the life of Paraguay's first archbishop, and the Sala de los Cristos, dedicated to the passion, death and resurrection of Jesus through religious imagery.
The museum offers free guided tours and stands as one of the main sacred-art venues in downtown Asunción.
