About this business

The National Pantheon of the Heroes is Paraguay's most recognizable and venerated monument. Its construction began in 1863 at the initiative of President Francisco Solano López, who conceived the building as a temple dedicated to the Virgin of the Assumption. Interrupted by the catastrophic War of the Triple Alliance (1864–1870), the work was not completed until 1936. Its neoclassical architectural design is inspired by the Hôtel des Invalides in Paris and the Roman Pantheon, with an imposing dome that dominates the skyline of Asunción's historic center. Inside rest the remains of key figures in Paraguayan history: Marshal Francisco Solano López, President Carlos Antonio López, Marshal José Félix Estigarribia and his wife, and the Child Martyrs of Acosta Ñu. It also houses an oratory dedicated to the Virgin of the Assumption where Sunday masses are held. The building is the zero point of Paraguay's national highways and is flanked by honor guards in historical uniform. The daily flag-raising and lowering ceremony attracts both locals and tourists. Admission is free and it is open every day.
