Centro Cultural Manzana de la Rivera
Nine restored colonial houses forming the most beautiful living museum in the historic center
About Centro Cultural Manzana de la Rivera
La Manzana de la Rivera is an old city block in Asunción's historic center, facing the Government Palace, transformed into a museum-library-theater-café complex. The architectural ensemble brings together nine restored colonial and neoclassical houses plus new construction; its recovery began in 1991 under the direction of architect Carlos Colombino, following a campaign by architecture students that prevented its demolition after the 1989 change of government.
The complex includes Casa Viola (Museo Memoria de la Ciudad), Casa Clari (Café Bar Casa Clari and an art gallery), Casa Clari-Mestre (the Ruy Díaz de Guzmán auditorium, used for the performing arts), Casa Vertúa (the Municipal Library, with more than 20,000 volumes), Casa Castelví (exhibition rooms and a toy library), the Casas Serra (the municipal video library), and the Federico García Lorca multi-purpose space, inaugurated in 1999. It combines the heritage value of colonial architecture with active cultural services: exhibitions, theatrical performances, concerts, and various events, with free admission.
