Museo Casa de la Independencia
The house where Paraguay's independence was planned in 1811
About Museo Casa de la Independencia
The Casa de la Independencia is one of the few surviving buildings of colonial Asunción. It was built in 1772 by the Spaniard Antonio Martínez Sáenz, married to the Paraguayan Petrona Caballero de Bazán, and preserves the colonial style typical of the period: adobe walls, a thatched roof, and a structure of tacuara cane and palm wood.
In this house, Paraguayan patriots secretly met to plan emancipation from Spanish rule. On the night of May 14, 1811, a group of them left this house to set in motion the events that culminated in Paraguay's declaration of independence. The Paraguayan state acquired the property in 1943, during the government of Higinio Morínigo; it was declared a Historic Monument in 1961, and the museum was inaugurated on May 14, 1965.
The collection includes colonial furniture, historical documents, household objects, weapons, and portraits of Paraguayan founding fathers, among them the sword of Fulgencio Yegros, the desk of Fernando de la Mora, and the portrait of Dr. José Gaspar Rodríguez de Francia.
