Museo Diocesano de Arte Jesuítico de las Reducciones de Santa María de Fe
The only museum with the complete nativity of all 30 Guaraní missions
About Museo Diocesano de Arte Jesuítico de las Reducciones de Santa María de Fe
Santa María de Fe was founded in 1647 under the original name "Nuestra Señora del Taré." Its original church was destroyed by a fire in 1889, though numerous religious images were saved and are preserved to this day. The Diocesan Museum of Jesuit Art of the Santa María de Fe Reductions opened on September 8, 1981, and is housed in the so-called "Casa de los Indios," a mission-era building whose exact construction date is not firmly established (tourism sources mention 1669, though no academic source confirms it with certainty) — one of the oldest surviving buildings among the Jesuit reductions.
The museum holds Baroque images from the 17th and 18th centuries — published figures range between 56 and 57 pieces, depending on the source — arranged across six thematic rooms: remnants of the original church, saints of the Society of Jesus, saints of the Church, Holy Angels and Archangels, the Nativity, and the Passion, Death and Resurrection of Christ. Its main highlight is the Nativity room, described by on-site guides as the only one among the region's Jesuit museums to preserve a complete nativity scene representing all 30 historical missions.
Visits include guides in Spanish, Guaraní, and English, with advance booking recommended. Located just over 230 km from Asunción, the museum is a must-visit stop on the Jesuit-Guaraní sacred art circuit of Misiones department.
