About this business

The Metropolitan Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption is one of Paraguay's most historic and important buildings. The first church on this site dates from 1539, just two years after the founding of Asunción by Spanish conquistadors, making it one of the oldest religious sites in continental South America. The current building was inaugurated in 1845 during the government of Carlos Antonio López, after earlier versions were destroyed by fires and floods. Its architecture combines neoclassical and baroque styles: the main facade with Corinthian columns and a grand pediment faces the Plaza de la Independencia, the historic heart of Asunción. The interior is distinguished by its high altar clad in Jesuit and Franciscan silver, its imposing vaults, and a series of paintings and sculptures of artistic and historical value. For foreign visitors, the cathedral is an unmissable landmark in Asunción's historic center. Admission is free.
