About this business

The Dr. Andrés Barbero Ethnographic Museum is the most specialized institution dedicated to Paraguay's indigenous cultures. Founded in 1929 by physician and philanthropist Andrés Barbero, the museum has occupied its own building on España 217 in Asunción since 1956. Its collection is considered the most important in South America in terms of the material culture of Paraguayan indigenous peoples: it includes ceramics, basketry, textiles, musical instruments, hunting and fishing objects, body ornaments and ritual items from ethnic groups such as the Guaraní, Aché, Ayoreo, Nivacle and Maká. The museum also houses a specialized anthropology and ethnography library that is an invaluable resource for researchers. For the foreign visitor, the Barbero Museum offers the unique opportunity to explore in depth the diversity of the original peoples who inhabited and still inhabit Paraguay. Free guided tours are available.
