About this business

The Ramón Elías Mythological Museum is one of Paraguay's most singular and original museums. It bears the name of its founder, Ramón Elías, an artist and collector passionate about Guaraní culture who devoted his life to gathering and creating representations of the mythological figures of Paraguayan folklore. The museum is located on the outskirts of Capiatá, just 19 km from Asunción on Route 2, making it an ideal day trip. Its collection is extraordinarily diverse: it includes sculptures and illustrations of the main Guaraní mythological beings — such as Pombero, Luisón, Jasy Jatere, Ka'a Pore and Ao Ao —, pieces of Paraguayan colonial art, objects from the country's historical wars and an extensive collection of indigenous handicrafts. The museum is also an educational and cultural outreach space: guided tours offer a fascinating narration of the legends and myths that form part of the Paraguayan and Guaraní collective imagination. For the foreign visitor — especially Argentines and Brazilians who share part of this Guaraní cultural heritage — this museum is a revealing experience unlike any other cultural space in the region.
