About Isla Umbú
Isla Umbú is a district of the Ñeembucú department in southwestern Paraguay. Its name incorporates the Guaraní word «umbú» — referring to the ombú tree (Phytolacca dioica), widespread across the Southern Cone landscape — and the term «isla» (island), which in the context of the Esteros del Ñeembucú often designates elevated terrain surrounded by water or wetlands. Extensive cattle ranching is the predominant economic activity in this rural area. Like the rest of Ñeembucú, the district is part of a region marked by the historical legacy of the War of the Triple Alliance, which in the nineteenth century left its imprint across the geography of southern Paraguay.
