About Misiones

Misiones Department is located in southern Paraguay, covering 9,556 km², bordered by Argentina and Itapúa. With 114,542 inhabitants (2022 Census), it is one of the least populated departments, giving it a rural and tranquil character. Its capital is San Juan Bautista, a city of around 21,000 inhabitants known as the "Birthplace of Mangoré," where the legendary guitarist Agustín Pío Barrios was born. The department's history is deeply marked by Jesuit evangelization: its very name recalls the ancient Guaraní reductions that flourished here between the 17th and 18th centuries, and towns such as San Ignacio, Santiago, Santa Rosa, and San Juan preserve churches, museums, and vestiges of that era. The economy is sustained by cattle ranching — with more than 573,000 head and sustained growth — agriculture of soy, rice, corn, and sweet orange, and a nascent cultural and religious tourism linked to the Camino de los Jesuitas. The real estate market is predominantly rural: cattle ranches, agricultural fields, and country retreats at prices well below the national average. For the international agricultural investor, Misiones offers fertile land, low price per hectare, and productive stability, with the added appeal of first-rate historical and cultural heritage in an uncrowded environment.
