About Amambay
Amambay Department covers 12,933 km² in the north of the Eastern Region, sharing a long dry border with the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso do Sul. With 179,412 inhabitants (2022 Census), 71% of its population lives in Pedro Juan Caballero — 127,437 inhabitants —, Paraguay's seventh most populated city, effectively conurbated with the Brazilian city of Ponta Porã. This dual border city operates as a large binational commercial hub: with no physical customs at many points, the flow of goods, people, and capital between the two countries is constant. Three pillars underpin the economy: cattle ranching — with more than one million head and sustained 10% annual growth over the last decade —, soy, and cross-border trade with Brazil. The border location gives the department its own economic dynamic: an active informal market, prices quoted in both guaraníes and reals, and a business environment accustomed to exchange rate volatility. Cerro Corá National Park, site of the last battle of the War of the Triple Alliance (1870), is the department's main natural and heritage attraction. In real estate, agricultural properties predominate: cattle ranches, soy fields, and urban lots in Pedro Juan Caballero at competitive prices. For the agricultural investor or entrepreneur with a binational vision, Amambay combines production scale, open border dynamics, and a market still to be fully explored.
